In my rising clouds series I wondered if colouring the black and white print using different media would yield different results.

Wax crayons

These proved a little difficult to fill in precisely on the print, as they were chunky. However I found that adding multiple shades was possible, so the sky is two blues, the lower right goes from brown to green. Tone overall effect is “less bright” overall but with good depth of colour, and different shades to my preferred watercolours.

Coloured pencils

I used white paper as a base, and the coloured pencils I used had a smidge of metallic in them so were more subdued. The sharp points allowed precise colouring but I could not get great depth of colour- overall it was more subtle. I could get some purple in the clouds and a red to green effect in the bottom right. After photographing I turned up the saturation but it remained a less colourful print.

Acrylic / gouache

I pulled some old paints out of the cupboard, the yellow was good but the red was a bit runny. A thickish brush made painting a bit tricky, easily fixed but I was a little impatient doing this. Bright colours! Used gouache on the clouds and sky, again the thick brush was a challenge on the fine spaces. But it was a test only. My photography smooths the colours and sometimes adds shadow effects (I just do it on my work desk with auto white balance and inconsistent lighting). The result is a bright print even if the clouds show the poor brush work.
